Youth and Political Awareness Today

– Sujaan Hussain

In today’s rapidly changing world, the role of youth has never been more significant. Young people are often described as the future of a nation, the driving force behind innovation, and the voice of change. However, there is a growing concern that many young individuals are becoming increasingly ignorant about important issues such as politics, governance, and social responsibility. This ignorance is not merely a lack of knowledge, but a black hole which is consuming there present and future.

One of the primary reasons behind this trend is the overwhelming influence of social media platforms, streaming services, and online games. They consume a large portion of a young  person’s time. While these platforms offer opportunities for learning and connection, they are often used mainly for entertainment. As a result, serious topics like politics are pushed aside, perceived as dull or unnecessarily complicated. This shift in attention leads to creation of a generation that is well-informed about trends and celebrities but lacks awareness of current affairs and civic duties.

Another contributing factor is the complexity of political systems. Politics can appear confusing, filled with unfamiliar terms, debates, and ideologies. Many young people feel intimidated or uninterested in trying to understand it. Instead of seeking clarity, they choose to avoid it altogether. This avoidance creates a gap in knowledge that gradually widens over time, making it even harder for them to engage meaningfully in discussions or decision-making processes.

Furthermore, the rise of misinformation has made the situation worse. In the digital age, information spreads rapidly, but not all of it is accurate. Young individuals often come across biased opinions, half-truths, or completely false narratives presented as facts. This spoon-feeding of misinformation and lack of proper guidance and critical thinking skills leads to difficulty in distinguishing between reliable information and misleading content. This can lead to confusion, misunderstanding, and ultimately, disinterest in engaging with political matters. Parental and educational institutes also play a crucial role. In many cases, discussions about politics and social issues are either avoided at home or not encouraged in schools. Students are often taught academic subjects in depth but are discouraged to express opinions about politics. The lack of open conversations and critical debates prevents young people from developing curiosity and confidence in expressing their views on important topics.

The consequences of such ignorance are serious and far-reaching. A politically unaware youth is less likely to participate in democratic processes such as voting or public discussions. They may fail to recognize their rights and responsibilities as citizens, making them more vulnerable to manipulation and misinformation. Over time, this can weaken democratic systems, as decisions are influenced by a population that is not fully informed or engaged.

However, it is important to note that this situation is not beyond improvement. The same technology that contributes to distraction can also be a powerful tool for awareness. Educational content, reliable news sources, and informative discussions are easily accessible online. By making a conscious effort to use these resources, young people can become more informed and engaged. Small steps, such as reading the news regularly, participating in discussions, or asking questions, can make a significant difference. Schools and families must also take responsibility in addressing this issue. Encouraging debates, discussions, and critical thinking from an early age can help build confidence and interest in political and social matters. Teachers can integrate current affairs into lessons, while parents can create an environment where questions and opinions are welcomed without any fear. When young individuals feel heard and informed, they are more likely to take an active interest in the world around them.

In conclusion, the growing ignorance among youth regarding politics and important societal issues is a matter of concern. It stems from a combination of distractions, complexity, misinformation, and lack of guidance. However, with the right approach and mindset, this trend can be reversed. Awareness is not just a responsibility but a necessity in today’s world.

If the youth—tomorrow’s citizens—choose to take responsibility seriously today, they hold the power to shape, challenge, and transform every aspect of society.
