What is sex education?

Sex education is not an option but a necessity. In Indian society, many people are still unaware of the concept of Sex Education. So, let's start with the basics:

What is sex education?

Sex education is the process of learning about human relationships, sexual relations, anatomy, reproductive health, problems faced by the adolescents during puberty, contraceptions, and more. Sex education is essential for individuals to acquire comprehensive and precise knowledge about their reproductive health, sexual relationships and concepts like good touch and bad touch. It plays a significant role in shaping a society that is well-informed, open-minded, and, most importantly, healthy.

A proper understanding of sex education helps individuals make appropriate decision regarding their sexual health. It can prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD)  and reduces the chances of unwanted pregnancies by promoting safe sex practices and use of proper contraceptives.

Sex education also emphasizes the importance of consent, understanding boundaries, and the right to say 'no', which in turn reduces the risk of sexual harrasment and assault. It encourages acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community and helps prevent  discrimation every sphere of life. It plays a vital role in combating misconceptions and stigma surrounding sex and sexuality.

Unfortunately it is seen that many people rely on misleading sources like the internet or peers  for information. Instead, they should be guided by more reliable sources like family and teachers. If sex education is introduced to adolescents, it helps them navigate a challenging phase of their life with confidence and clarity. It also helps individuals develop a positive and respectful attitude towards sexual relationships.

In conclusion, we can say that sex education is not just a branch of biology-it is a vital part of life. It is not something to be ashamed of. We should speak about it freely, comfortably, and responsibly, both in at our homes and in our communities. Therefore, it is a necessity for Sex Education to be included in school curriculums. There is nothing shameful about it and asking questions should never be discouraged. Instead, open discussions be welcomed. We deserve to have the right to question without the discomfort.
